Sang-Hoon Bae’s Invention

While we wait for the conversion into law of DL 39/24,

for now passed in the Senate with a vote of confidence, I was very impressed by the publication in Science of the research done by Sang-Hoon Bae, of Washington University in St.Louis in the United States, on a new type of capacitor (in English this term better describes its ability to store energy and has nothing to do with condensation as our Italian word seems to refer to).

As I understand it, batteries can store a lot of electricity but take a long time to recharge, while capacitors take much less time to recharge but store small amounts of energy and last a short time. This research has shown these new capacitor heterostructures have 19 times the energy density of normal capacitors. Song-Hoon Bae said, ‘Our next steps will be to further improve the structure of this material so that we can meet the need for ultrafast charging and discharging and very high energy densities in capacitors.

We need to be able to do this without losing storage capacity with repeated charges to see this material used extensively in large electronics, such as electric vehicles, and in other developing green technologies.

This new material will allow new capacitors to store more energy, charge quickly without sacrificing durability.

Honestly, it is all Greek to me. But it seems that we are on the threshold of a new era that is opening before us: the possibility of having electricity available near us at all times, without the old batteries.

So, the problem will not be how to have electricity available, it will instead be how to produce it.

And how to produce it near us. You can write to me at tony_console@yahoo.it
